More Live Action News: Airbender Sparks Controversy
In a 2007 interview, M. Night Shyamalan told Variety that he believed Avatar: The Last Airbender offered an opportunity to make a live-action Miyazaki film. Never mind that Miyazaki didn't do Airbender - the creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have claimed Miyazaki as their inspiration for the award-winning cartoon and given its heavy anime-influenced look, Shyamalan, Paramount and Nickelodeon think that's close enough.
But since then, the production has sparked a little controversy that just doesn't seem to be going away. Shyamalan announced that the cast had been set in early December yet, despite the show's distinct eastern influence, the cast is without any Asian actors.
According to a post in Entertainment Weekly, Shyamalan has cast newcomer Noah Ringer as the lead role of Aang. Ringer is a karate enthusiast who answered an open casting call in his Texas hometown.
Also confirmed, Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) will play the part of Aang's friend Sokka and Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will play sis Katara. The Fire Nation's bad guy Prince Zuko will be played by singer Jesse McCartney.
While the rumblings have mostly been contained to forums and blog comments, other creators are starting to weigh in on the topic, most recently Derek Kirk Kim of Same Difference fame. Kim has addressed this issue in several lengthy blog posts and has even organized a petition to be sent to the powers that be at Paramount.
So, what do you think?
Is this a bad move for Shyamalan and Paramount? Will it affect the movie's box office take?
